SSR, also known as surgical sperm retrieval, is a reproductive procedure that aids men whose ejaculates are empty of sperm.
The two testicles located at the base of the penis are where the sperm is created. The sperm exit the testicles through a coil-shaped tube known as the epididymis, and they remain there until they are ready to be utilized. Another tube connecting each epididymis to the prostate is the vas deferens.
The seminal vesicle is connected to the vas deferens, which extend from the scrotum into the groin (together forming the ejaculatory duct). When it’s time to ejaculate, the sperm travels via the ejaculatory ducts, where it combines with the fluids from the seminal vesicles, prostate, and other glands to produce the semen, and then it travels down the urethra to emerge out the end of the penis. However, there may be a barrier that stops the sperm from releasing because of some damage, genetic abnormalities, or infection.
Most of them are not:
- Men lacking the vas deferens are born without them due to congenital vas deferens absence. As a result, the sperm cannot drain from the testicle into a medium.
- Vasectomy is a surgical operation used to sterilize men or provide them with long-term birth control.
- Non-obstructive azoospermia is a condition in which the testes produce sperm that is less concentrated and does not go to the vas deferens.
Surgical Sperm Retrieval can be used to treat such instances (SSR).
